My Writing Goals
An application for an internship in your major:
My goal as a writer would be to use rhetorical sensitivity and persuade my reader(s) that I am a perfect candidate for the internship. By doing so I will give the image that I am well qualified for the position. Knowing that I am writing to a future supervisor, or manager I will be able to present myself in a professional way. This is a situation that graphics and multimedia wouldn’t be appropriate.
A flyer for a march you are organizing to protest a tuition increase
My goal is to convey a powerful message on a single sheet of paper. I would want to present myself as a student that is already trying to figure out ways to pay for school. The thought of getting more loans or just a larger one is quite scary. Knowing that my readers are going to be current students, and alumni, I will be able to present the flyer in a way that appeals to their understanding of outrageous student loans and other means to afford school. Being able to compose a very powerful flyer would show that it is very thought out. Images, or graphs would be a great way to show the current cost compared to the possible increased cost. The result would hopefully be a better understanding and willingness to join the protest.
Your response to a film that you viewed in class, posted to an online discussion board
My purpose is to provide a good response that will critique and leave a positive or negative review depending on the film. I want the other students to know that I am equal to them, but that school is very important so I will take the discussion seriously. I will be writing to other students so the way I communicate might change to show that I too am a student. In an online discussion it is easy to incorporate images or direct links to a different page to better support the response.
A substantial research-based essay for a class you are taking
In this situation my goal would be to have done the research necessary to advocate the new understanding that I gained. How well I do in creating a successful image depends completely on the amount of research that was done. Understanding who I am writing to helps me to shape my essay, in this case its most likely going to be graded by my professor. I will use appropriate language and substantial research not only to show that I have done the work, but also to be informative. Using the correct wording as a medium can be very powerful, it is up to me to convey my message in a professional manner. This is another situation that I feel images and other graphics shouldn’t be used.
