Throughout this semester I have learned so much about my writing and how to improve it. I chose obesity as my social justice issue for this semester, which proved to be a great choice for me. I chose obesity because I have both family and friends that suffer from being overweight and obese, and I wanted to learn more about this condition and how to prevent it. When I first began studying obesity, I thought it was all about dieting, exercising and eating right; but after doing all of my research there are so many other key factors that come into play. The obesity topic leads me to research so much on obesity and how it has changed over the years. I formed my perspective out of ignorance because I had my own assumption on obesity and the causes that lead to it. My perspective definitely changed over the course of this semester because f the knowledge that I obtained through research. One of my sources that really impacted my thoughts was when I asked a very close friend of mine about obesity because he suffers from it. Specifically when he said that he had so many aspirations and wasn’t able to achieve a majority of them because of his trouble with losing weight. This changed my own thoughts on obesity because it is something that I have never had to deal with and it has never been in the way of me achieving any of my goals. This interview with Jake really opened my eyes and gave me a glimpse of what it was like. I feel like all of my pieces were geared towards a specific audience, but when I received my constructive criticism I was able to better emphasize whom I was writing to. Peer and teacher revisions truly assisted me with making sure that my pieces were more clear and rhetorical. Looking back at my rough drafts compared to my final drafts I can tell that I have better organization, my thesis statements are more clearly stated, and my logos, pathos and ethos are more affectively placed. The style and clarity differ throughout the different revisions, but all significantly improved from the rough drafts. The three genres that I chose to submit onto the magazine project were my profile, proposal and report. I chose these over all of the others because I felt like they were more persuasive and affective for the audience. These three genres were compelling because they all have a connection between them. The profile was written about someone who specifically deals with obesity, and how he lives with it in his everyday life. The Proposal uses emotional appeals to understand a certain point of view, either from someone who suffers from obesity, or observes it in their life. The report gives statistics on obesity and how prevalent it is in today’s society. I think that all of these genres together communicate something that interests the audience and gives them a wide outlook on this social justice issue. The genre that I chose to use for my translation/adaptation was my report. It was exciting for me to change such a boring and uneventful document into a unique and more alluring piece that will better capture the audience’s attention. I feel like it can be difficult to present statistics, facts and data through a text document, but because I had the choice to turn it into a slideshow with photos I feel like it was easier to understand. I learned from transforming the report into a slideshow, that there are many ways to present data to an audience. How affective the research, data and knowledge you are presenting can depend on many different elements; therefore it is important to find a genre that is best fitting with the type of data you are trying present. Revising our different genres and the design of our magazine was a great experience for me. Both Jared and Amber taught me a lot about my profile, and had wonderful feedback on my work. I was able to look at my genre differently and also help them with their revising. In our magazine group I was the visual editor, therefore I had the chance to design our magazine webpage. This experience was fun for me because I think it is important for the webpage to be captivating to the audience. One specific experience I had was when I had to make sure that all of our videos could be published on the website. It was a challenge for me, but I was able to figure it out and the end result looks great. I truly enjoyed intermediate writing this semester and have learned so much about my writing and myself. Although it was difficult for me to focus on one social justice issue throughout the whole semester, it was a great learning experience for me, and really helped me in researching more than I ever thought I would. It was great to be able to do more research and write abut the same topic in several different genres, but still make it appealing to the audience. I gained a lot of knowledge throughout this course, and will carry that throughout my education experience.
