Memories of Writing
I don’t have many memories of when I was first learning to read and write. I do remember the alphabet sheets that the teachers would give me with a dotted line and I was supposed to copy each letter on the dotted line. Another memory that I have is when I was first learning to write in cursive. I was probably like 10 and in my room I had a little desk and I would sit there for hours trying to write my name. After so many attempts I would run in to show my parents, gain their approval and then run back to my room to keep practicing. I moved around a couple time when I was younger and each time was able to miss school. I, of course loved missing school but it had its consequences. I missed out on key learning opportunities. My parents saw it extremely important to get my reading abilities to my grade level so I attended Sylvan Learning Center for awhile to get me caught up.
There is one series that I loved to read and that was the Goosebumps, at times the stories did scare me but I found them fun to read. One thing that influenced my writing was while I was serving an LDS mission. The importance of writing in a journal is stressed; this is where I started to like to write. Its very easy for me to look over some details in my day, but having the chance to think back on the day and write it down was in a way relaxing and a good way to always remember the past. The image that comes to mind when I think of the word writer is an old style ink pen and very fancy handwriting. An image that I think of for myself as a writer would be a time clock that is winding down.
Thinking about a metaphor that would describe me, I would say “I am like a racecar driver on a track full of speed bumps” I say that because when it comes to writing I am quick to start, and I know where I am headed, but there constant revises or speed bumps that slow me down. I really enjoy research essays because I love to learn about random things. If I could write any book it would be a book about facts, its just random knowledge that I like. I dislike poetry because I have no idea how to write it and half the time I don’t know what it is talking about. Text messages, Facebook, and any other form of instant messaging have given me the desire to spell right and try my best to use punctuation. It is a pet peeve of mine the way that people spell in texts. I like that writing is a way to be creative. I can’t draw, paint or sculpt, so writing is one way that I feel like I can fulfill that creative desire. As a writer there are things that I would like to learn, poetry is one of them. Setting goals that would allow myself to become a well-rounded writer.
