Writing in My Everyday Life
This assignment actually made me realize how much time I spend writing in some form. This is my first semester back at school in almost 4 years and therefore it has been awhile since I have hand written an essay. I work in a local health clinic and write quite a bit in messages or on sticky notes. Being in a medical setting every thing has to be documented, every time a patient calls in, it is in some form archived. I don’t do much online writing such as posting on Facebook, twitter, blogs or reviews. I do on the other hand spend a lot of time texting, in most of my down time, between calls at work and during breaks from schoolwork.
Looking at the time I have spent doing homework (since Monday) which all of my assignments have been writing, introducing myself to my online classmates, discussing psychology and nutrition. I spend a lot of time brainstorming so I feel well prepared for the assignment in which I am about to start. I have more than one window open at a time, generally 3-4 applications or websites. I feel that this helps me concentrate and stay focused on the task that I am working on. As previously stated this is my first semester back, I know what I want to do for a career so I am taking school far more serious than I did before. I recently bought a laptop so I will be able to stay ahead on my schoolwork, which is where I do all of my work. It is much more organized and definitely a lot easier to read. Sometimes I include pictures in texts or emails, with such access to the web and so many pictures. It is easy to find pictures that explain an emotion or a situation better than writing, as the saying goes “a picture is worth a 1000 words”.
It is amazing how easy and accessible writing is now days. It is so easy for an average Joe to write something excellent, with all of the tools at our fingertips. For example; Google, Word, PowerPoint and even spell check, all contribute in my opinion to how one writes. Word helps me write better by suggesting that I revise a sentence, or informs me when I have spelled a word wrong. It is a perspective that I haven’t seen before. There are times when I don’t know how to spell a word, so I pull out my phone and spell it to the best of my ability and then let spell check tell me how to spell it right. I feel that we have so many amazing tools that help one write better, but by doing so also hinder one’s ability because one knows that he or she can rely on those tools. We are very lucky to have such a vast amount of knowledge just a click away.
