Steps of Research
Researcher-explorer is the first step in a research essay. According to the book “At the start of an exploratory search, you probably don’t know exactly what you want to know. Your goal, therefore, is to find several resources tat look interesting so that you can learn about your topic and figure out where you want to go with it” (Ede, pg. 172) I think this process is key to getting stared. Researcher-explorer is almost like brain storming but using the Internet and different sources.
Researcher-gatherer is the second step. According to the book “Students who have found a good, meaningful focus for their work also feel interested and motivated to learn more. Once you have such a focus, you can start to gather sources with a specific purpose in mind” (Ede, pg. 178). This is an important step because one you have gathered from what you first explored the research essay has a solid focus and the research to back it up.
Researcher-evaluator is the third step, but it is also done while one explores and gathers. According to the book “When you evaluate, you make rhetorical choices based on your purpose and goals, your topic, and your audience” (Ede, pg. 198). Researcher-evaluator is important because one is looking for information that will benefit the research essay in the long run or broader picture.
Researcher-creator The last step is to create. According to the book “The end result is something new – a new understanding of your topic and its complexity – which you share with your reader through your writing” (Ede, pg. 206). Using all of these concepts allows one to write a very solid research essay that will be interesting and informative to the reader.
Why is it important to think about these shifting roles/purposes when conducting academic research? I think that switching between these concepts will help me write an essay that will be informative, interesting and easy to understand. By looking at the big picture as I research and gather will help keep the essay focused
