Consumerism
The first two pictures have famous meanings. The first one is a famous quote by Rene Descartes and he said “I think therefore I am.” Implying that because we think we live. The saying has been changed in this circumstance to say “I shop therefore I am.” Now we have so much at our disposal, literally, that is the reason we exist. The second picture is of Uncle Sam recruiting for war. Now it can be replaced with big corporations that want us to buy their products, even though we don’t need them. The third picture is of a bar code being used as the bars of a jail cell. We are constantly reminded that what we have isn’t good enough and that we have to keep upgrading, to “keep up with the Jones.” My brother likes to ask the question “what is the difference between us and slaves?” His answer is that the slaves didn’t have to pay for their housing. They preformed backbreaking labor for others gain. We follow in this same rut. Working insane hours only to keep paying for our new stuff. This is what our future generations have to look forward to, unless we decided to change our habits.
